Question of the day: NISM Series XII

Chapter 4 · Secondary MarketsHard

If the index falls 10% before 1 p.m., how long is market-wide trading halted?

  • A15 minutes
  • B45 minutes, then a 15-minute call auction
  • CFor the rest of the trading day
  • D2 hours, then a 30-minute call auction
A 10% move before 1 p.m. halts trading for 45 minutes, after which trading resumes with a 15-minute pre-open call auction.

Indian exchanges use online, screen-based trading: BOLT on BSE, NEAT on NSE, TWS on MSEI. Trades can be proprietary or client trades. Other features: - Mobile trading: convenient, but limited by connectivity and small screens. - Algorithmic trading: computer programs that place orders when set conditions are met; fast, accurate and free of emotion, but a badly designed algorithm can misfire. Institutions use it to slice large orders. - High-frequency trading (HFT): a subset of algo trading with very short holding periods, huge numbers of orders often cancelled before execution (high order-to-trade ratios), few overnight positions. - Co-location: brokers place servers inside the exchange premises to cut latency (the delay between sending and receiving an order), for a fee. Execution sequence: order placed with broker → routed to exchange → displayed → matched electronically → confirmed → contract note generated.
