The full concept: Capital gains

Worked example: Meera redeems equity fund units held for 3 years, with a gain of ₹2,40,000. The first ₹1,25,000 of long-term gains is exempt, so the taxable gain is ₹1,15,000. Tax = 12.5% × ₹1,15,000 = ₹14,375 (plus cess).

Exam trap: Gains from debt-oriented funds are taxed at the slab rate whatever the holding period. The ₹1.25 lakh exemption applies only to long-term gains on equity-oriented schemes.
